Dr. Julie Cappella

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

My Background: I graduated from Northeastern University with honors and honors thesis distinction, I then obtained my Masters from Boston College in Developmental Psychology and finally, my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from William James College (formerly Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology).  Throughout my schooling, I have held jobs in mental health and then Harvard affiliated internships and Post-Doctoral Fellowships.  Presently, I have twenty years of experience treating a wide range of issues across a broad range of ages and difficult life events.  I work well with children, teens and adults, treating anxiety disorders, OCD, depression, eating disorders, as well as obesity and health related issues. In my Doctoral program, I specialized as a Health Psychologist, and as such, I use pain management coping skills and I work with people adjusting to injuries or illness.

My warmth, professionalism and good sense of humor enable me to gain acceptance with my clients, especially children and teens. Once I have established a strong working relationship, I actively teach clients to change negative or overly perfectionistic thinking and unhelpful behaviors. My goal is to be the Psychologist who I would want for my own children, or for myself.

My unique approach incorporates an active, relational model with cognitive behavioral as well as self-compassion skill building. In addition, I teach mindfulness, relaxation and visualization. Formerly the Lead Psychologist at the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children’s Hospital Boston, I teach strategies that are effective in changing harmful thoughts and behaviors.
